James Tilghman brings a forward looking strategic design vision and a gift for design communication to the U+ global practice
James Tilghman is a design leader and educator with a vast portfolio of projects recognized in the US and internationally for Design Excellence. He has provided transformational design leadership, visioning expertise and strategic guidance in a broad range of practice arenas, including the Science and Technology, Corporate Commercial, Higher Education, Healthcare, Transportation and Public sector/Federal Design Markets. His portfolio includes 3 projects in the role of Lead Designer in the United Sates GSA Design Excellence program, and he is the recipient of the NASA Blue Marble Award for environmental stewardship. His work has consistently been recognized for design excellence throughout his career by the American Institute of Architects and numerous professional organizations.
As a member of the Academic and Professional community in the DC Metro region, his reach extends to research into the impact of near future autonomous transportation systems on urban settlements and Vertical Communities. He is the author of the Aerotropolis Studio at the University of Maryland 2018-2023, which continues to explore the convergence of AI, new transportation technology and programming for vertical community concepts in the BWI Region. As a leader in the Thesis Program at the University of Maryland he has mentored many young Architects, both graduates and undergraduates alike, on their professional pathways in the DMV region and beyond. He has been a Member of the AIA DC Design Excellence Committee since 2009.
